CASTLE OF SAN PELAGIO – VILLA ZABORRA

The Castle of San Pelagio – Villa Zaborra is located at the entrance of Due Carrare, coming from Padua, in the locality Terradura. The castle has medieval origins (1340) that can be seen in the splendid watchtower that belonged to the noble family of Da Carrara. In the following centuries, behind the tower, arose the various parts of the villa: the central body and the two ‘barchesse’ (service buildings). Historically importance also the adjacent oratory dedicated to San Michele which, although having undergone numerous renovations, seems to have Lombard origins. In Venetian times it belonged to the Sant’Uliana and later to the Dotto de’ Dauli. Since the middle of the 18th century the Castle of San Pelagio has been owned by the Counts Zaborra, who opened it to the public and enriched it with an extraordinary aeronautic collection in memory of Gabriele D'Annunzio and the squadron Serenissima that left from here for the flight to Vienna on August 9, 1918. Flyers were thrown into the Vienna sky with a message that still strikes me: “…we did not come except for the joy of the boldness…”. The memories of those fantastic and distant days, are collected in the ancient manor where the poet stayed guest of the owners. Some rooms of the Castle show traces of frescoes. In all hover the presences of the characters who made the history of the flight and that of the human progress. So from room to room, from character to character, you can see, with the villa, also the whole history of flight.

Outside the Castle is absorbed in its beautiful gardens with hundreds of fragrant and ancient roses, secular trees, walks along the avenue of carpini where the view sweeps over the Euganean Hills.

The Castle of San Pelagio, unique in Europe for its aeronautical collection, is an enchanting place where to spend a peaceful day of leisure, stopping in the park to enjoy, with the scents of flowers, the atmosphere of a life in harmony with nature.
